We are part of the Fare Free London (FFL) campaign. FFL is an organisation comprised of community groups, trade unions, environmentalists and other citizens who have come together to campaign for free public transport in London. Free public transport opens the city to everyone, and is central to a vision of London as a city where people, their health and the lives they live, come first. Free public transport is socially just, supporting the lowest-income households that are least likely to have a car. We are calling for:
- Free public travel for all – open the city for everyone!
- Less air pollution and carbon emissions.
- Fully secure, well-paid transport jobs.
Is It Viable to Provide Free Travel for Everyone?
Transport for London (TfL) already provides free transport for over-60s, under-10s and many teenagers, as well as offering other discounts. Extending these schemes using the Oyster card would present few practical problems. Additionally, many other areas have been able to make this work – public transport is already free in many smaller cities, including Luxembourg, Tallinn (Estonia), Montpellier and Dunkerque (France) and Albuquerque and Kansas City (USA).
How Can I Get Involved?
You can email the folks at FFL: info@farefreelondon.org and/or visit their website here. Alternatively, you can check out the Upcoming Events section of our website to keep up to date with future events.
