The Struggle Against Apartheid Will Not Stop!

Minhaj ul Arifeen writes about the struggle for Palestinian liberation and the establishment of a new political ground in the Middle East.

19th March 2024

The mainstream media has led people to believe that there is a country fighting against terrorists. Does it sound old? Yes? Then perhaps you know the history of Western illegal occupations around the world in the last 500 years. Every occupation was rooted out from Vietnam to Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria – the list goes on.

The imperialist hubris that manifests through the illusions created by Western elites and their governments deludes people to justify racism and apartheid. The mainstream Western media has been actively manoeuvring the real picture of the occupation since the start of the Palestinian liberation struggle in 1948. After October 7th, 2023, the media complicitly shaped the narrative of the ‘Israel vs. Hamas’ war in Gaza, while the truth remains that since 1948, the struggle for Palestinian liberation has taken many forms, in resistance of the Israeli occupation. Looking at the asymmetric dynamics, it is straight away a genocidal terror unleashed on Palestinians since the Nakba.[1]

Toofan Al Aqsa” is the new era of resistance against apartheid, one of those thousands of incidents in history when a coloniser was responded to in their own language. This might have left many around the world in shock; however, those who are politically conscious and acknowledge the apartheid in Palestine could foresee a Palestinian response. The people of Gaza refused to be humiliated by the Israeli occupation any further.

To understand the chaos in the imperialist core over the Palestinian question, it must be seen through the lens of its contemporary and colonial history. During the Great March of Return in 2018-2019, when the people of Gaza non-violently marched to reclaim their right to self-determination[2] that was issued by the United Nations in 1994, about 200 unarmed civilians were massacred by the Israeli occupation forces. This is tantamount to the brutally violent reality of the apartheid state created by global imperialists.

In 2020, Donald Trump brokered the Abraham Accords – bilateral agreements to normalise relations between Israel and a number of Arab countries including Bahrain, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Sudan, and Morocco. This rupture was yet another attempt to liquidate the Palestinian question and justify apartheid through the legitimacy of the Muslim world. In 2021, the United States (US) assembled another block named I2U2 that included Israel, India, the US, and the UAE. In the G20 summit in Delhi The India-Middle East-Europe Corridor (IMEC) – a road network, was announced, which will pass through the aforementioned countries as a trade route to isolate Iran.

People in all of the Arab and other Muslim countries are extremely upset – the Muslim governments who had paved the way for normalisation are going through immense political pressure to denounce the Israeli occupation. A new political ground has been created in the Middle East. These countries had previously argued for the two-state solution – the establishment of an independent State of Palestine alongside the State of Israel; however, the whole narrative of the two-state solution has unveiled itself as a liberal cover to maintain a permanent Nakba. The people of Palestine want one secular democratic country more than Al-Fatah’s “dummy government.”

Now is the time to draw our attention towards the international structure of racism and colonialism entrenched in the Israeli occupation. The idea of racial superiority is the foundation of Zionist ideology, which is exactly how European colonies managed to establish their reigns of terror. The imperialist hubris once again comes into play with its “biblical supremacy” by legitimising the occupation with phrases like “Jews’ divine right to return.” Israel also follows the US’s footsteps by calling 7th October its 9/11 to fight the terror which has no end in sight. The Israeli elites must not forget that just like the US faced defeat despite all its military might, Israel will also never be victorious. Despite the centuries long looting, Europeans were kicked out of these colonies and; Israel must never forget these important lessons.

The only solution to this conflict is Peace Accords – official agreements to come to peace, which guarantees one state for the people of all religions and faiths. Only then will it be possible to end the apartheid state and guarantee equal rights for everyone.

[1] The Nakba was the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians from Palestine in 1948.

[2] Self-determination is a human right – it the ability or power for people to make decisions for themselves; especially the power of a nation to decide for itself how it will be governed.
